Essentials: Afro-Latin Soul – Mulatu Astatke

Mulatu Astatke, is known as the father of Ethio-Jazz. His album, Afro-Latin Soul was recorded in Brooklyn, and released in 1966 on Worthy Records. This Album isn’t the usual Mulatu Ethio-Jazz sound, it has a more soulful feel and leans toward the R&B-informed boogaloo sound of the mid-’60s. There are occasional bursts of more Ethiopian colours on tracks composed by himself such as “Mascaram Setaba.”He also proves he can write both a jazz ballad  and Latin jazz numbers though you can see less of the Ehtio-Jazz imprint on these tracks. The most defining part of this album is the fact that he has taken the five-tone scale of Asia and Africa and intertwined them into something special and exciting; a mixture of three cultures, Ethiopian, Puerto Rican and American. A must have album for fans of Latin jazz and cross-cultural collaboration.
