Here is the December edition and the last On point 5 of the year.  Check out Tony’s on point 5 playlist below.

Childish Gambino – ‘Awaken My Love’

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, veers from his usual hip-hop agenda to produce a George Clinton/ Sly Stone/ Lewis Taylor inspired masterpiece that incorporates soul, blues, and some low down dirty funk. People are gassing over ‘Redbone’ and ‘Have Some Love’ but for me the standout tune is the epic ‘Stand Tall’.

Young Gun Silver Fox – ‘West End Coast’

I’m a real sucker for the AOR sound a la Steely Dan, America etc etc. so when I was first put onto this lp a few weeks ago by the bredren Daz-I-Kue I was a little excited to say the least. This 2015 release courtesy of Andy Platts and Shawn Lee is nothing short of spectacular. Ten well-crafted and beautifully written songs guaranteed to take your breath away. Personal fave ‘Long Way Back’.

Arthur Verocai – Arthur Verocai

A fantastic re-issue from the Mr Bongo label. This incredible collection of Brazilian niceness from the multi-talented Arthur Verocai was originally recorded in 1972 and features Celia on vocals and Paulo Moura on sax. A serious mixture of bossa, MPB, jazz, samba psychedelics and funk. Essential.

Daniel Crawford – Dillafornia 7

Describing this as his annual Dilla tribute track the LA based keyboard and producer don Daniel Crawford releases another serious track – Dillafornia 7. Coming hot on the heels of his ‘Living for the City’ project this bona-fide two step killer is worthy of your attention. Mighty.

Sumochief

The UK quartet of Oscar Laurence, Olly Sarkar, Jack Polley and keyboard phenome Joe Armon-Jones come correct with this heavyweight 8-tracker. Laden with beats, basslines, big lyrics and killer keys on that Dilla / Headhunters tip this is a must have for lovers of the hip-hop/ nu-jazz vibe.
