John Armstrong releases Brazilian Afrobeat Compilation

To state John Armstrong’s combination of musical knowledge and curiosity as encyclopaedic would be an understatement. Boasting over 200 compilations that stretch over the four corners of the Musical globe, both in spirit and in genre, he is the gift that keeps on giving. Soul, Rock ’n’ Roll, Afro, Folk, Zouk and Flamenco have all been covered by Armstrong, however his real passion is in making sure that the sounds of Latin America are heard across the UK. Forging BBC Radio 2’s show Viva Latino, Armstrong built a platform that disrupted the radio waves for millions of listeners.

It is safe to say that we are excited about his latest release. Released at the beginning of June, John Armstrong presents Afrobeat/Brasil is an armoury of well-researched weapons. The ties between Africa and South America reach back to the formation of world’s continents, yet the intrinsic link between the two take a more modern form on this occasion. Fourteen stomping tracks, laden with the horn made so universal by the great Fela, forceful riffs and as oscillating energy that rises and falls – the compilation represents a true treat for the ears. Yet there are hints of Samba and Bossa throughout, and a lightness that could only originate from Brazil. With musicians on the album coming from Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Sao Paolo, Porto Alegre and even as far afield as Paris, perspective is key. What is most encouraging, is that these tracks were all made between 2011 and 2017, indicating that the genre is very much alive and kicking, and in a state of constant evolution.

With a tracklist containing no weak links, this album comes racing out the blocks with Origem, tinged with Middle-Eastern melodies. Other heavy-hitters include Afoxe by Parisian band Camarao Orkestra, an eight-minute journey of a track that bubbles to a funky climax, as well as the album’s closing track Afrofuturo by Ellen Oléria, layered with tribal percussion and a beat that is thoroughly modern. We couldn’t review this album without making a very honourable mention to Bixiga 70, whose track 5 Esquinas is a real highlight. Musica Macondo are delighted to welcome Bixiga 70 to the Jazz Cafe on July 25th. The night, in conjunction with The Jazz Cafe, provides a rare opportunity for UK fans to see something truly special, in one of London’s most iconic venues.

An exclusive album launch party will be taking place tomorrow (June 24th) at the BBE Store (Institute of Light) in East London, between 3pm and 8pm. Not to be missed!
