Words & Sounds with Hunrosa

Ahead of his release ‘Ransome’ on WahWah45s, Hunrosa (a.k.a Sam Vicary) talks to Mr. Redley about his latest musical project, what it’s like being a part of The Cinematic Orchestra and treats us to little guest mix:

1. You’re just about to release your track ‘Ransome’ on the enigmatic Wah Wah 45s label, can you tell us a little bit about how the concept behind ‘Hunrosa’ came about, and how it differs from your other musical projects?

Hunrosa is a project that I have been working on and developing for the past three years. Having studied and performed jazz for a number of years I became a lot more interested in electronic music and was keen to develop this area of possible creativity.

I was fortunate enough to study with an incredible electronic musician and producer named Cherif Hashizume (jon Hopkins, Brian Eno etc.) whilst residing in London. As a result of these intensive sessions i ended up with an EP of Music that Wahwah45’s were keen to release.

The name ‘hunrosa’ is a Cornish word meaning ‘to dream.’ I was lucky enough to have grown up in the county and have taken a lot of visual inspiration from the scenery when composing the music. I also like to use foley/found sound from various locations to add an organic sense to the electronic sounds.

2. How does being part of The Cinematic Orchestra influence the music that you make as Hunrosa?

Being involved in ‘The Cinematic orchestra’ has been an amazing, inspiring experience. I have been listening to the band for years and it’s been quite surreal at times to play those tunes! I feel I have grown as a musician due to the incredible experiences and also gained a real sense of the notion of pure music and sublety and how that translates to the listener. It’s also been amazing to meet and perform with some amazing artists through this band including Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Manu Delago and Moses sumney!

3. Last month you played at a big fundraiser in memory of Simon Goss down at the Jazz Café. What a great and eclectic lineup!! Can you tell us how it went??

Unfortunately we couldn’t make this gig due to the snow!!

4. You’ve put this wicked mix together, how did you record it, and what was the concept behind it?
This mix was made using ableton live which is the software I use for composing/producing. I wanted to include as many influences as possible in the mix and attempted to make the styles blend! It features a couple of artists that I play with including ‘Dominic j Marshall’ who is great friend and incredible musician.

5. What’s next for Hunrosa in 2018??

I’m very excited for the rest of the year with ‘Hunrosa.’ I am constantly writing music and collaborating with lots of amazing musicians and am looking at writing and releasing as much as possible this year. I am also developing a live show and can’t wait to share that with everybody!

Hunrosa’s single ‘Ransome’ is out on Friday 20th April with a brilliant remix from Clap! Clap!. You can pre-order it here.
