Premiere: Dave De Rose & Dan Nicholls – Penstemon

Long-time collaborators Dave De Rose & Dan Nicholls (Agile Experiments / Free Movements / Vula Viel) join forces, channelling their love for ambient and electronic music into this psychedelic-trip-shaped LP.

Emerging from their separate paths Dave & Dan synchronised at a time where they were both intuitively processing their rejection of mainstream music concepts. Deepening into awareness, their latest work showcases an inherent intensity, a reaching for emotive and natural connections to sound making, showcasing their impressionistic, gritty and textural musical statements through improvisation.

After a deeply mellow evolving first half of sound, Dave De Rose and Dan Nicholls’s LP ‘plants heal’ steers the ship to shark-infested waters with ‘penstemon’. This track pushes the dreaminess out of the game, introducing spikes in the form of uptempo forward motion, painting firmly a darker picture of reality.

In Dave’s words “… as with all life, there is darkness and light, all of it belonging to the one true experience. In order to heal we must bring the hurt out, embrace it and respond to it’s necessary callings…”. This track also features the cutting sonic debauchery of Marius Mathizick who adds outer-worldly and barely recognisable effected guitar to Dave and Dan’s minimal production.

These compositions outline an immersive journey of discovery, characterised by generous and contemplative atmospherics amongst spells of exhilarating energy which culminate into a peaceful healing zone.

This long awaited duo collaboration follows 4 years of complete musical abandonment into free improv with De Rose‘s Agile Experiments and 3 years of pursuing exploration of their other shared love for techno and dance music during Nicholl‘s Free Movements nights.

Left to their own devices to express freely within the boundaries of their mutual appreciation and passion for sonics and abstractions in rhythm, these two monstrous underdogs present here a work capable of stimulating all areas of a willing mind.
